The .mec file extension is associated with Maximus, a BBS software package originally developed by Scott J. Dudley through Lanius Corporation. Maximus was initially released for MS-DOS and OS/2, with later versions supporting 32-bit Windows.
MECCA is primarily a display-oriented language. Its tokens can control such things as text colours and user interaction, allowing operators to create menus and other BBS screens. MECCA code can also write selected information to disk for exchange with BBS door programs.
A .mec file is a source file used with the MECCA tools belonging to Maximus, rather than a general-purpose document. Maximus and the MECCA language are legacy BBS technologies, so these files are mainly encountered in older or preserved Maximus installations.
To view the source, open the .mec file with a plain-text editor. The file is intended to be processed by the MECCA tools supplied with the appropriate Maximus installation.
To use the file in a Maximus BBS, compile or otherwise process it with the MECCA compiler for the relevant MS-DOS, OS/2, or Windows version of Maximus.
There is no standard modern conversion format for a Maximus MECCA source file. A .mec file can be edited as text, but converting it to another source or document format would generally require rewriting its MECCA code.
When the goal is to use the content in Maximus, the practical operation is to compile the source with the corresponding MECCA tools rather than convert it.
