The Merry X-Mas ransomware, also known as MRCR, appeared in January 2017. It encrypted original user files and added the .merry extension when renaming them.
The ransomware's ransom note is named YOUR_FILES_ARE_DEAD.hta. A .merry file contains encrypted data from the original file and cannot be used normally until it has been decrypted.
