Video files with mod file extension are standard DVD MPEG-2 VOB files with audio in Dolby Digital audio format. MOD video file format is used by the tape less JVC camera recorders (JVC EVERIO), Panasonic camera recorders (Panasonic D-Snap) and Canon camera recorders (Canon FS). The original founder of this format is JVC.
The mod files are stored only on camera's hard drive or memory card. If files are transported by the camera software to the computer, the file extension mod will by changed to file extension MPG or MPEG. Audio and video data will be modified for perfect playback in a computer.
If you exported files from the camera recorder directly to computer, not through camera software, you can change file extension MOD to file extension MPG or MPEG and play a video file in media player, that supports playback of video files with MPEG2 compression (DVD-MPEG2) and playback of Dolby Digital audio format (mod files contains MPEG2 video data and MPEG-1 Audio Layer II audio data).
This method has sometimes problems with malfunction playback, like missed video or audio. The recommended media player, that has no problem with MOD playback, is VLC Media Player, but VLC Media Player has mod file associated as Tracker Module (sound file) and it is necessary to change mod file extension to MPG or MPEG file extension.
If you have to play the mod video file in VLC Media Player without renamed file extension, VLC Player will report, that the file is corrupted or it is not the Tracker Module audio format. Other recommended media player is Microsoft Windows Media Player version 12 and higher, but also file extension mod must be changed to mpg or mpeg.
Rename file extension MOD to file extension MPG or MPEG and use VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player to playback the MOD video file.
For simple conversion of the MOD video file can be use for example FFmpeg application. If you have FFmpeg installed on your computer, run the command line and go to the directory, where you saved the MOD video file (for example myvideo.MOD).
In the directory type the command:
ffmpeg -i myvideo.MOD -vcodec copy -acodec ac3 -ab 384k myvideo.mpg -acodec mp2 -ab 192k -newaudio
and FFmpeg will convert MOD video file to MPG video file, which will be playable in the most of media players.

The mod file extension was and perhaps still is used by some program for sound modules. These audio files could be in the past found on Amiga platform, as well as MS-DOS. Commonly found in old computer games.
MOD files are often referred to as tracker modules, and composing modules is known as tracking, simply because the first ever module creating program was Soundtracker, created by Karsten Obarski in 1987.
Soundtracker was cloned many times, with programs such as Noisetracker, and Protracker being direct descendants from the original Soundtracker code, and others such as MED/OctaMED and Oktalyzer being written from scratch. Such programs are called trackers in general.
Can be many different sound formats sharing same file extension.

Some programs might still be able to playback some of the MOD formats.
Possibly can be exported to other formats.

The mod extension is also used for some old molecular model format used in the Sequence Alignment and Modeling System from the UCSC Computational Biology Group.
This .mod model file is created by the buildmodel, addfims, or modelfromalign programs. When many_files is not set (the default), buildmodel places the run statistics, parameter settings, and the frequency model into this file as well.
Seems like highly unique and specific file type.
This MOD file type can be probably only opened in the Sequence Alignment and Modeling System.
Possibly can be exported to other similar formats, perhaps for data exchange purposes.
