MaxL is a multidimensional database access language for Analytic Services, developed by Oracle. It is used to automate administrative and database operations in Oracle Essbase.
A mxls file stores a MaxL script in encrypted form. The encryption prevents the script contents from being read as ordinary text while allowing the Essbase MaxL tools to process it.
The format is associated with the Oracle Essbase client tools and is intended for use with MaxL Shell on supported Essbase platforms. It is an obsolete format and may be encountered mainly in older Essbase deployments.
An mxls file is not intended to be opened in a text editor. Use Oracle Essbase MaxL Shell, also known as essmsh, to process the script in an Essbase environment.
Because the file is encrypted, MaxL Shell is generally used to run it rather than to display its contents. The appropriate Essbase client installation must be available on the supported platform.
There is no standard conversion from an encrypted MaxL script to another file format. The encryption is part of the file's intended use, so ordinary text and script converters cannot reliably convert it.
If the original unencrypted MaxL source is available, it can be edited or saved as a regular MaxL script. Without that source, the file should be processed by MaxL Shell rather than converted.
