The typical nbu file contains complete backup of phone, including contacts, messages and other data located in internal memory of the phone as well as phone SD card.
Nokia PC Suite can restore *.nbu files. There is also 3rd party program called Noki, that allows exploring the contents of *.nbu files.
Several Nokia utilities can export various data like contacts, messages etc. out of NBF backups. There is however no way how to actually convert these files to any other file.
