ChiWriter was a commercial scientific text editor created by Cay Horstmann in 1986. It was one of the first WYSIWYG editors to support mathematical formulas, including on the very slow IBM PC XT computers that were common at the time.
ChiWriter used PFT files as part of its printer-font system. These files are associated with the program's printed output rather than with the text of a ChiWriter document.
The format belongs to the MS-DOS version of ChiWriter and is an old, unsupported file format. ChiWriter is no longer supported on current operating systems, so PFT files are rarely encountered outside of preserved DOS software and documents.
Open a .pft file with ChiWriter under MS-DOS or a compatible DOS emulator such as DOSBox. The file is normally used by ChiWriter's printer-font system rather than opened as a standalone document.
Current Windows, macOS and Linux applications generally cannot open ChiWriter printer-font files directly.
PFT files contain printer-font data rather than document text, so they are not normally converted as documents.
If the font is needed for an old ChiWriter document, keep the PFT file with the ChiWriter installation and use ChiWriter in a DOS environment to print the document.
