File type category:
Encoded and encrypted file
Date updated: September 28, 2026
Norton Encrypt was an old Norton utility for Macintosh computers that encrypted files. The resulting encrypted files use the PNNE file extension.
The format is likely obsolete and is unlikely to be used by current macOS software. A PNNE file generally needs the original Norton Encrypt utility, or a compatible environment, to decrypt its contents before they can be used by another application.
Open a PNNE file with Norton Encrypt on a compatible Macintosh system. Because the utility is obsolete, it may not run on current versions of macOS.
If the original utility is unavailable, there may be no current application that can directly open or decrypt the file.
PNNE files cannot normally be converted directly because their contents are encrypted. Use Norton Encrypt to decrypt the file first, then save the decrypted contents in a format supported by the application that uses them.
If Norton Encrypt or a compatible Macintosh environment is unavailable, there is no reliable general-purpose converter for this format.
