The PRE file extension is used by Nero WaveEditor, an audio editing application from Nero AG for Microsoft Windows. A PRE file contains a WaveEditor preset rather than an audio recording.
The preset stores configuration information for a WaveEditor operation, allowing the software to reuse those settings. It is intended to work within Nero WaveEditor and is not normally useful as a standalone audio file.
Open a PRE file in Nero WaveEditor on Microsoft Windows. Use WaveEditor's preset or effect-management features to load the file rather than opening it as an audio recording.
A Nero WaveEditor preset is not an audio format, so it normally cannot be converted meaningfully to another file format. Open it in Nero WaveEditor and recreate or save its settings as a preset if another compatible preset is required.
To create a converted audio file, apply the preset to audio in WaveEditor and export the resulting audio using the program's audio export options.

The PRE file extension is associated with the OpenOffice.org free, multiplatform office suite and its successor, Apache OpenOffice. A PRE file contains preprocessor output produced while processing OpenOffice.org program source files.
These files are used during the programming and build process of the office suite. They are intermediate development files rather than documents created for ordinary office use.
A PRE file can usually be inspected with a plain-text editor because preprocessor output is text-based. The Apache OpenOffice office applications may not recognize it as a document.
For files needed by a build, use the development tools or process that generated them.
A PRE file normally has no useful conversion to another document format. It is an intermediate output file, so the preferred way to obtain a different version is to rerun the relevant preprocessing step from the original source.
If the purpose is only to read the contents, it can be opened and saved as plain text, but this does not preserve any special build-related function.

The PRE file extension is associated with SonicWALL Global Management System, a management platform for SonicWALL security hardware and software. A PRE file stores SGMS syslog information.
The log can contain event and status records collected from managed SonicWALL products. It is part of the SGMS logging system rather than a general-purpose document format.
SonicWALL was acquired by Dell.
Open the file with SonicWALL Global Management System or the SonicWALL software that created it. SGMS is the appropriate program for interpreting the log data.
A text editor may display the contents if the file is stored as plain text, but it will not provide SGMS's log-management functions.
