POV-Ray DF3 proximity pattern parameters
File type: Settings, options, themes or skins file
A .prox file contains parameters for a DF3 proximity pattern used by POV-Ray (Persistence of Vision Raytracer).
It is a settings file for a POV-Ray rendering setup, rather than a standalone image or 3D model.

POV-Ray is a cross-platform 3D rendering program that creates images from scene description files. The .prox file extension is associated with its DF3 proximity pattern parameters.
The file stores the parameters needed to define a proximity pattern for use in a POV-Ray scene. DF3 is used by POV-Ray for three-dimensional density data, and the proximity settings form part of the rendering configuration.
A .prox file is therefore used together with POV-Ray scene and pattern data on the platforms supported by the raytracer. It is a specialized settings format, not a general-purpose graphics format.
Use POV-Ray to use a .prox file in the rendering setup for which it was created. The file is normally referenced as part of a POV-Ray scene or pattern configuration, rather than opened as an image.
If the file needs to be inspected or edited, try a plain-text editor first. Change parameters only when the file is being used with a compatible POV-Ray scene.
A .prox file does not have a useful standalone conversion to an image or another 3D format because it stores POV-Ray proximity-pattern parameters. Keep the file with the related POV-Ray scene and render the scene with POV-Ray.
To use the same settings elsewhere, recreate the proximity pattern parameters in the target POV-Ray scene or configuration.
