Pegasus Mail is an e-mail client developed by David Harris. It was originally associated with MS-DOS and Novell environments and was later developed for Microsoft Windows.
A Pegasus Mail .r file stores program resources used by the mail client. It is a supporting file for the application rather than a user-created message or document, and normally works together with other files in a Pegasus Mail installation.
The format is specific to Pegasus Mail and is not a general-purpose resource exchange format.

Ratfor is a preprocessor for Fortran that adds structured programming features and other conveniences to the language. An R file contains the human-readable Ratfor source, rather than a compiled program.
Ratfor was used mainly with Unix-era Fortran development. Its output is ordinary Fortran source, which can then be passed to a Fortran compiler. Fortran is a general-purpose, procedural, imperative programming language especially suited to numeric computation and scientific computing.
Ratfor is a historical tool and is no longer commonly used, although existing projects may still contain these files.
An R file is a plain-text source file. Open it with a text editor or source-code editor to view or modify the Ratfor code.
To use the file as a program source, process it with a Ratfor preprocessor and then compile the resulting Fortran source with a Fortran compiler. A general-purpose application may not recognize the file directly.
Ratfor source is normally converted by running it through the Ratfor preprocessor. This produces Fortran source, which can be saved in a filename accepted by the intended Fortran compiler.
There is no meaningful document-format conversion for an R file; the practical conversion is translation from Ratfor source to Fortran source, followed by compilation if an executable is required.
