The SEM file extension was used for sealed e-mail messages protected by the SealedMedia platform. SealedMedia technology encrypted and controlled access to the message and its contents.
Authorized recipients could use the Unsealer program to open the file. The sealed file therefore served as a protected container for the e-mail rather than as a standard message file.
SealedMedia technology was later associated with Oracle and is now legacy software. Unsealer is associated with Microsoft Windows.
On Microsoft Windows, open the file with Unsealer. The recipient may also need the authorization or credentials supplied with the sealed e-mail.
If Unsealer is unavailable or the file is no longer authorized, a normal mail client is unlikely to open the protected content.
Open the file with Unsealer and, if the software and access rights permit, save or copy the revealed message into a standard document or e-mail format.

Emulator file
Date updated: October 2, 2026
The SEM file extension is used by some ZX Spectrum emulators for snapshots. A snapshot preserves the current state of the virtual machine, including the information needed to continue emulation from that point.
Support may depend on the particular emulator used to create the file, and SEM is not a general-purpose ZX Spectrum program or disk-image format.
Open the .sem file with the ZX Spectrum emulator that created it. Use the emulator's snapshot-loading or restore command rather than opening the file as a document.
If the original emulator is unavailable, another emulator may not recognise the file because SEM snapshot support is software-specific.
A compatible ZX Spectrum emulator may be able to load the snapshot and save it in another snapshot format.
If the emulator does not provide an export option, the file is normally used only with software that supports SEM snapshots.
