PayDay is a ransomware strain reported in December 2016 that appears to be based on the Hidden Tear ransomware project. It encrypts files on an affected computer and appends the .sexy file extension to their names.
The affected files contain the user's original data in encrypted form. The .sexy suffix is a marker added by PayDay, not a normal file format, so the files cannot be opened normally by the applications that created them.
PayDay also creates a ransom note named !!!!!ATENÇÃO!!!!!.html.
A .sexy file cannot normally be opened or used by its original application while it remains encrypted. Renaming the file or changing its extension does not decrypt its contents.
Recovery requires a compatible PayDay decryptor, if one is available, or restoration of the original files from a backup.
These files cannot be meaningfully converted while they are encrypted. A file-conversion program cannot recover the original contents.
First decrypt the files with a compatible PayDay decryptor, if available, or restore them from a backup. The recovered files can then be opened or converted using their original applications.
