The .shit file extension was introduced by a Locky ransomware variant in October 2016. Earlier Locky variants used the zepto, locky and odin extensions.
Like earlier Locky variants, this version was distributed through spam emails containing malicious attachments, including WS and JS script files. If the recipient executed a script from an attachment, it downloaded and launched an encrypted DLL installer through Windows Rundll32.exe.
The ransomware encrypted the user's original files and renamed them with the .shit suffix. The extension does not identify a separate usable document format; it indicates that the file contents were processed by Locky.
A .shit file cannot normally be opened by a document, image or media application because its contents have been encrypted by Locky. Renaming the file or changing its extension does not decrypt it.
There is no decryptor available for .shit files. The affected files can be used again only after successful decryption or recovery of the original data.
A .shit file cannot be meaningfully converted while it remains encrypted. File conversion programs cannot restore the original contents.
The original data must first be recovered, or the files must be successfully decrypted, before they can be saved in another format.
