SOX is related to Extensible Markup Language (XML), a simple, flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879). XML was originally designed to meet the needs of large-scale electronic publishing and is also used to exchange many types of data on the Web and elsewhere.
A .sox file contains schema definitions for object-oriented XML. It is a text-based file, so its contents can be read as text, although interpreting the schema requires software that understands the SOX language.
SOX is an older XML schema approach and is not a mainstream XML schema standard today. Documents that depend on it may therefore require their original or a compatible SOX-aware tool.
A .sox file can be viewed as text with any text editor. An XML-aware editor may provide basic text handling, but it may not understand SOX-specific schema rules.
To validate or use the schema, open it with the SOX-aware application or parser associated with the XML project that supplied the file.
There is no generally applicable, lossless conversion for a .sox file. If the schema must be used with another XML schema language, it normally has to be rewritten manually or with a tool that specifically supports SOX and the target language.

SoX is an open-source, cross-platform command-line audio utility. It converts computer audio files between formats, applies effects, and can play and record audio files on most platforms.
The SoX native format stores sound data together with information describing how the samples are encoded. It is intended primarily for use by SoX rather than as a widely supported exchange format.
SoX is available for Unix and Linux as well as other platforms, including Windows and macOS.
Open the file with the SoX command-line program on Linux or another Unix-like system. SoX can read its native .sox format and send the audio to an output file or to a supported playback device. Other audio programs may not recognize this format directly.
Use SoX to convert the file to a more widely supported format, for example with sox input.sox output.wav. SoX can also apply effects during conversion.
