VAX/VMS was Digital Equipment Corporation's native operating system for its VAX architecture. VAX processors and VMS were engineered concurrently to take advantage of each other, and the initial implementation of the VAXcluster facility was developed as part of that environment. The source code in an SPS file belongs to this VAX/VMS software environment rather than to a general-purpose document format.
VAX/VMS was renamed OpenVMS in 1991 or 1992 as the operating system was ported to the Alpha architecture, branded by the X/Open consortium and modified to comply with POSIX standards. Other operating systems used on VAX computers included various releases of BSD UNIX through 4.3BSD, Ultrix-32 and VAXELN. NetBSD and OpenBSD also support various VAX models, and work has been done to port Linux to the VAX architecture.
Because this is source code, the file is normally used together with the other source files, build procedures and development tools from its VAX/VMS software project.
On a VAX/VMS or OpenVMS system, open the SPS file with the system's text editor, such as EDT or the EVE editor. VMS development tools can then use it as part of the corresponding source tree when the required build procedures are available.
On another platform, the file can be inspected with a text editor that supports plain text. This will display the source, but it will not provide the VAX/VMS build environment required to compile or run it.
There is no general-purpose conversion for a VAX/VMS SPS source file. Preserve it as text if the goal is to archive or inspect the source.
To produce usable software, keep the file with its related source files and build procedures and process it in the original VAX/VMS or compatible OpenVMS development environment. Porting the source to another system requires source-level changes rather than a simple file-format conversion.
