The .thor file extension was introduced by a Locky ransomware variant in October 2016. Earlier Locky variants used the .zepto, .locky and .odin extensions.
Like earlier Locky variants, this version was distributed in spam emails containing attachments such as WS and JS files. If a recipient executed the attached script, it downloaded and launched an encrypted DLL installer through Windows Rundll32.exe.
The ransomware encrypted the contents of the affected files and changed their names by adding the .thor suffix. The suffix does not identify the original file format, and changing it back does not decrypt the data. This is a Windows ransomware-related file extension rather than a separate document format.
A .thor file cannot be opened normally because it contains data encrypted by Locky. No decryptor for .thor files is currently available. Do not execute the file or any related attachment. Identify the original file type from its filename or a backup, and restore the original files from a clean backup or another suitable recovery source.
Renaming the .thor file or opening it with a different program will not recover its contents.
A .thor file cannot be usefully converted to another format while it remains encrypted. Conversion is possible only after the original data has been recovered or decrypted; the recovered file can then be opened and exported using software that supports its original format.
