Glulx is a portable VM, like the Z-machine. Unlike the Z-machine, it uses 32-bit data and addresses, so it can handle game files up to four gigabytes long. Also unlike the Z-machine, it has native support for Glk I/O, so game files can use any capability Glk provides. However, like the Z-machine -- again -- you can write games in the Inform language and compile them to Glulx game files.

CLAN stands for Computerized Language ANalysis. It is designed to analyze data transcribed in the format of the Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES), and uses ULX files as part of its lexical data.
Leonid Spektor at Carnegie Mellon University wrote CLAN and continues to develop it. CLAN has a graphical user interface and runs on Macintosh and Windows computers. Earlier versions also ran on DOS and Unix without a graphical user interface.
CLAN performs automatic analyses of transcript data, including frequency counts, word searches, co-occurrence analyses, mean length of utterance (MLU) counts, interactional analyses, text changes, and morphosyntactic analysis.
Open a ULX file with CLAN on Windows or macOS. Use the file within CLAN's lexical and transcript-analysis workflow.
ULX files are used by CLAN as lexical data files. To preserve their lexical information, keep the file in its original ULX form and work with it in CLAN rather than converting it with unrelated software.
