File transports allow you to move data from a specific UMF formatted file into a system node – typically, a pipeline. To use the file transport, you enter a file transport using an Universal Resource Identifer (URI). The syntax for the file transport differs by operating system.
Typically, the file uses either an XML or UMF extension, but as long as the contents of the file are formatted in UMF, the file extension can be almost any type.
Use any text editor to view content of *.umf files.

MediaHolder uses the Universal Media Format to hold information about media files selected for download. A UMF file contains technical data that the software can read when preparing downloads.
When downloading multiple media files, MediaHolder uses the information in the UMF file to add files to its queue. This reduces the amount of data that must be requested from the server and supports parallel downloads from several servers.
The UMF file is therefore a supporting data file for MediaHolder, not a replacement for the media files it describes. The format is associated with MediaHolder for Microsoft Windows.
Open a UMF file with MediaHolder on Microsoft Windows. The file is intended for use by the software and may not display useful content when opened independently.
A UMF file is download and technical data for MediaHolder, so it normally has no useful conversion to a media format.
Use MediaHolder to process the file and download the associated media. Converting the downloaded media, rather than the UMF file, is appropriate when a different media format is required.
