The vmcx file extension is associated with Windows Virtual PC, Microsoft's virtualization software for Microsoft Windows. Windows Virtual PC allows a Windows computer to run virtual machines with their own operating systems and applications.

A vmcx file contains information used to identify and manage a virtual machine, including information displayed for it in the Virtual Machines folder in Windows Explorer. It is a supporting file for the virtual machine rather than a virtual hard disk or a user document.

Windows Virtual PC uses the file internally when displaying and managing its virtual machines. The format is associated with the legacy Windows Virtual PC software and is not a general-purpose virtual machine format used by current virtualization products.
