Homeworld was one of the first full 3D science-fiction real-time strategy games. It was developed by Relic Entertainment and released in 1999. Its VP files package data used by the game rather than user-created documents.
A VP file may contain resources needed by the game, and normally works as part of the installed Homeworld data set. The game expects these files in its installation and data directories.
This is a legacy format associated with the original Windows release of Homeworld. It is intended for use by the game and its modding tools, rather than as a general-purpose archive format.
The original Windows version of Homeworld is the appropriate program for using a VP file. Keep the file in the game's installation or data directory and do not rename it; Homeworld loads its VP files automatically when it starts.
A VP file is not normally meant to be opened as a standalone document. Compatible Homeworld modding or archive utilities may be able to inspect or extract its contents.
VP files are game-data archives, so they do not have a useful conversion to a document, image, or media format. Homeworld should use the file in its original form.
For modding or inspection, a compatible Homeworld utility can extract the archive contents. Individual extracted resources may require separate tools, depending on their format.

VOCPACK is a compressor and decompressor for 8-bit digital sound. Its lossless method preserves the source data, so the sound can be restored without degradation. File headers do not need to be removed before compression.
The program was designed for .VOC SoundBlaster files and .WAV Windows audio files, but it does not rely on a particular file structure. It can therefore compress other 8-bit sound data, including signed and unsigned samples at any sampling rate, in mono or stereo.
Reported compression ratios range from 0.8 for audio sampled at 11 kHz to 0.4 for audio sampled at 44 kHz. The best results are obtained with 44 kHz mono or stereo sound. General-purpose archivers can produce files up to twice as large, while lossy compressors can produce smaller files by changing the sound.
Use VOCPACK to decompress a VP file. The resulting sound can then be opened by an audio program that supports its restored format, such as VOC or WAV when the file was compressed from one of those formats.
Conversion of a VP file is normally performed by decompressing it with VOCPACK. Because the compression is lossless, decompression restores the original 8-bit sound data.
After decompression, the resulting VOC, WAV, or other 8-bit sound data can be exported to another audio format with software that supports that source format.

Xfit is part of XtalView, a molecular graphics and model-building system used in structural biology, including crystallography, molecular modeling, and electron microscopy. A VP file records viewpoint information for the program's display rather than serving as a general-purpose molecular-data exchange file.
The file is associated specifically with Xfit and is used with the molecular models or maps being viewed there.
XtalView and Xfit are available for Linux and Unix systems.
Open a VP file with Xfit in the XtalView suite on Linux or Unix. Use Xfit to load the viewpoint with the associated model or map data.
A VP file is a program-specific Xfit viewpoint file rather than a transferable molecular-data file, so it is not normally converted. Open it in Xfit to use the saved viewpoint.
