CWEB is a literate-programming system created by Donald Knuth and adapted for C by Silvio Levy. It combines source code with documentation written for TeX.
CWEB is a version of WEB for documenting C, C++, and Java programs. A CWEB document normally contains interleaved program code and prose. The ctangle program extracts compilable source code, while cweave produces formatted documentation for TeX.
The system was revised to support C++ and ANSI C and was designed for Unix and Unix-like platforms, including Linux. The .w format is considered obsolete, although existing documents can still be processed with compatible CWEB tools.
A .w file is a text-based CWEB source document, so it can be inspected with a plain-text editor on Unix or Linux. This displays the source and documentation but does not format or extract them.
To process the document as intended, use the CWEB ctangle and cweave utilities. They extract the program source and generate TeX documentation, respectively.
There is no general-purpose conversion that preserves all parts of a CWEB document in another document format. Use ctangle to extract its C or C++ source code, or cweave to generate TeX output for typesetting.
The extracted source or generated TeX can then be handled by the corresponding compiler or TeX tools. These operations may not retain the original literate-programming structure.
