Apple iWeb was part of Apple's website-authoring software for Mac OS X and macOS. A .webtemplate file stores an iWeb website template, including the layout and design elements used as the starting point for a webpage or site.
The file is used by iWeb together with the rest of the application's site data. It is not normally a complete published website on its own.
iWeb has been discontinued, and current versions of macOS do not include it. The format is therefore largely obsolete and is mainly encountered in older iWeb projects or installations.
Open a .webtemplate file with Apple iWeb on a Mac that still has iWeb installed. The file is intended to be used from within iWeb rather than opened as a general-purpose document.
Current macOS versions do not provide a supported application for opening this format. If iWeb is unavailable, the file may not be usable as a template.
A .webtemplate file does not have a useful standalone conversion to a common document format. Open it in iWeb and use the template to create a site or page.
iWeb can publish the resulting site as HTML files, but this exports the website created from the template rather than converting the template itself.
