The wfd file extension is associated with the Microsoft Exchange and used for its workflow process definition.
Workflow processes can be saved as a Workflow Process Definition (*.wfd), or as File System Format (*.wef).
The first option, which is the default, is the native format that is saved to the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server folder or SharePoint Portal Server folder.
The second option will save the workflow process, properties, and common script out in File System Format (meaning binary format). This will make it possible for copies of workflow to be distributed easily to users who do not have access to the same Exchange server.

GIS, GPS navigation and map file

WFD files belong to Wayfinder navigation software from Wayfinder Systems. The software provided GPS navigation and map-based route guidance, and used these files to store map data.
The format is proprietary and is intended to be read by the corresponding Wayfinder application rather than by general GIS software. Wayfinder products appear to be obsolete and are no longer actively supported by their developer.
Open a WFD file with the Wayfinder software for which it was supplied, if that software is still available on a compatible mobile device. The file may not open as a standalone map in current desktop GIS or GPS applications.
Because Wayfinder is obsolete, finding a compatible application and device may be difficult. Do not rename the file or edit it as plain text, as it is a proprietary map-data file.
The proprietary map data is intended for use within the Wayfinder application, and conversion to other formats may not be practical.
If the original Wayfinder software provides an export function, use that function to create a supported map or route format.
