WiX is an open-source toolset originally created at Microsoft for building Windows Installer packages from XML source code. A .wxs file contains the installation project's source data, such as products, packages, directories, files, components, features, user interface elements and custom actions.
The file is analogous to a .cpp file for C++. Its XML document has a Wix root element and normally uses a WiX schema namespace. A project can contain one or more WXS files together with other WiX source and project files.
The WiX compiler processes WXS source files into intermediate object files, and the WiX linker uses those objects to produce output such as an MSI installation package or an MSM merge module. The format is used with the WiX Toolset on Microsoft Windows.
Use any text editor or XML-aware editor to view and edit a .wxs file. The WiX Toolset can compile the file when it is part of a Windows installer project.
A .wxs file is source code rather than a document format, so it is not normally converted to another format. Compile and link it with the WiX Toolset to create an MSI installer or another supported Windows Installer output.
