File type: Various data file
A ychat file is a saved chat log created by Yahoo! Instant Messenger for Microsoft Windows.
It contains the text of a conversation recorded by the messaging client.
File type category:
Various data file
Date updated: October 22, 2026
Record marked as obsolete and not updated for a long time.
The ychat file extension is associated with Yahoo! Instant Messenger, Yahoo's instant messaging client. The Windows version could save conversations as chat log files.
A ychat file stores the contents of a saved Yahoo! Messenger conversation. The format is obsolete because Yahoo! discontinued Yahoo! Messenger, and the service and its original client are no longer maintained.
The original Yahoo! Instant Messenger for Microsoft Windows is the program associated with ychat files. If the legacy client is already installed, use it to open the file.
Because Yahoo! Messenger has been discontinued, no currently supported application may be able to open this format.
If the file can still be opened with the original Yahoo! Messenger software, copy the conversation into a text or document file manually.
