MacImage is a Windows utility for producing hybrid Macintosh/PC CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. It combines a Macintosh HFS file system with an ISO 9660 file system so that the resulting optical media can provide platform-appropriate content.
An hfs file contains a Macintosh disk image in HFS or HFS+ partition mode. When the HFS image is burned as part of optical media, its Macintosh file-system content is intended to be accessed by a Macintosh computer, although compatible Windows utilities can also inspect or extract it.
On Microsoft Windows, open the hfs file with MacImage, PeaZip, or HFSExplorer. MacImage can work with its own Macintosh disk images, while PeaZip and HFSExplorer may allow the image contents to be browsed or extracted.
HFS disk images can usually be converted to other disk image formats with suitable disk-image software. Use a disk-image utility such as MacImage to create a compatible image or optical disc; HFSExplorer or PeaZip can extract the files, after which they can be copied into another disk image. Conversion may not preserve all Macintosh file-system metadata.
