File extension nomedia is mainly used for special file in Google Android based phones and devices. 

The .nomedia file contain no data, but serve only to "hide" audio, picture and other multimedia files in their directories, so they do not appear in media player, gallery, video player (these directories are not indexed by the system and apps).

These files are basically empty text files with .nomedia file extension and with size of zero kilobytes.

The nomedia files are also used to increase speed of the system, that indexed only folders without ".nomedia" files. You can use Nomedia app for Android to create .nomedia files in folders on Android phone storage.
