A pts file extension is mainly related to a special text based format that contains 3D data in so-called PointCloud.
PointCloud is basically a 3D coordinate system, in which points are usually defined by X, Y, and Z coordinates. Used to describe external surface of an object.
These files are commonly generated by 3D scanners (Leica Geosystems, Cyra) and some CAD programs (ENVI, Trimble).
