The RMF file extension is relalated to the FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) format. The *.rmf file stores redistribution matrix.
There are 2 other file types using
the RMF file extension!
.rmf - Beatnik rich music format file
.rmf - Adobe Acrobat Rights Management document file
RMF file extension - FITS redistribution matrix file
What is rmf file? How to open rmf files?
File type specification:
The RMF file extension is used for one of the derived formats of FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) format commonly used in Astronomy. The RMF is a standard OGIP file format.
A .rmf file contains maps from energy space into detector pulse height (or position) space. Since detectors are not perfect, this involves a spreading of the observed counts by the detector resolution, which is expressed as a matrix multiplication. In high resolution instruments (e.g. diffraction gratings, such as HETG and LETG) the matrix is almost diagonal. In proportional counters the matrix elements are non-zero over a large area. CCD detectors, such as ACIS, are an intermediate case, with most of the response being almost diagonal, but escape peaks and low energy tails adding significant contributions.
