The format is designed for DiskStation Manager (DSM), Synology's Linux-based operating system for NAS devices. A package commonly includes an INFO metadata file, lifecycle scripts for installation and removal, icons, configuration resources, and a compressed payload containing application files. The exact internal layout varies by DSM generation and package developer.
Packages may be downloaded from the official Synology Package Center, obtained from a trusted third-party developer, or built for a particular Synology device and DSM release. Compatibility can depend on the NAS processor architecture, DSM version, required system libraries, permissions, dependencies, and package trust or signing requirements.
Although an SPK package is commonly based on a tar archive and can often be inspected with general-purpose archive utilities, its contents are intended to be managed by DSM. Installation scripts can create users, modify services, and access system directories, so packages should be obtained from trusted sources and checked for compatibility before installation.
On Windows, utilities such as 7-Zip can usually display or extract the contents. On macOS and Linux, archive managers and standard command-line tools can inspect the underlying archive, but these platforms do not provide the DSM environment required to install or operate the package.
On a compatible Synology NAS, sign in to DSM, open Package Center, and choose the manual installation option to select the SPK package. DSM checks the package and installs it when the device architecture, DSM version, dependencies, permissions, and applicable trust requirements are satisfied.
On Windows, use 7-Zip or another archive utility to inspect or extract the package. On macOS and Linux, use an archive manager or a compatible tar utility for inspection. Extracting the files does not install the application; installation should be performed on the target Synology NAS through DSM.
There is generally no useful conversion between a Synology package and another file format. To create or update one, use Synology package development tools or a project such as spksrc, then build the package for the target DSM version and NAS architecture. Manually repacking extracted files can produce an invalid package because its metadata, permissions, scripts, and archive structure must remain consistent.
Archive utilities can extract an SPK package for inspection, but online converters are not recommended and normally cannot convert it into a functional application format. To move the application, install the original package on a compatible NAS; to distribute modified software, build a new package using the appropriate Synology packaging workflow.
