The trashes file extension is associated with Mac OS X (macOS) operating system for Apple laptop and desktop computers.
The .trashes file is a container (system folder) that stores data deleted by user in Finder.
After user empty OS X (macOS) trash, data stored in .trashes container will be erased from storage.
Similar trashes files are also used in some Linux variants, as well as Google Android operating system.
When you open *.trashes file, you will see what files were recently deleted and put there. You can either delete or restore them.
You cannot convert *.trashes files to anything else. But when you recover data from OS X Recycle Bin, you can work (and thus convert) them as you like.
