File extension usd is probably best know for its use for the default (both ascii and binary) file type for Universal Scene Description format from Pixar.
A typical .usd file contains 3D computer graphics data in either ascii or binary format, including geometry, shaders and other information about the 3D model and references to additional content.
It was first published as open source software in 2016, under a modified Apache license. It can be download from GitHub.
Most 3d modeling tools adopted support of various degree for USD format around 2022/2023.
