Workflow processes can be saved as a Workflow Process Definition (*.wfd), or as File System Format (*.wef). The first option, which is the default, is the native format that is saved to the Microsoft® Exchange 2000 Server folder or SharePoint Portal Server folder. The second option will save the workflow process, properties, and common script out in File System Format (meaning binary format).
