WFLX file extension - WildFire ransomware affected file

What is wflx file? How to open wflx files?

File type specification:

Ransomware encrypted file type icon Ransomware encrypted file type

File extension wflx is infamously associated with a ransomware labeled as WildFire that is distributed via e-mails, encrypts users files and them demands ransom in bitcoins for their recovery.

This particular ransomware is distributed via e-mails with a macro-embedded Word document attached.

Note: It appears that this ransomware was rebranded in October 2016 to Hades and now uses semi random suffix made up of the string ".~HL" plus the first 5 letters of the encryption password.  For example, file.doc would be encrypted as file.doc.~HLX1234.

Help how to open:

Such files can only be accessed again and recovered when you pay the ransom in bitcoins. You can also wait until new decrypter is made and available for public.

How to convert:

You cannot convert or recover .wflx files without some decryption utility.
