The a04 file extension is associated with ARJ. Its one part of a multi-volume compressed ARJ archive.
arj is used for the native format of ARJ archiver. ARJ is a file archiver that compresses files into a disk space saving archive. It is fast, reliable, and has a rich set of features which include Windows 9x, Millenium long filename support, file version management, data damage protection, ANSI escape sequence display handler, configurable command options, multiple volume archives (archives that span diskettes) and much more.
Some ARJ files can be parts of a multi-volume sequences. In ARJ you can split a huge archive to a few smaller files, which are called volumes.

In order to unpack the multi-volume ARJ archive, you need to place ALL of the split parts in the same directory and start extraction of the first volume (.arj). The program will automatically use all of the parts to extract the content of the archive.
The a04 (e.g. Avatar.a04 file) file is only one part of ARJ multi-volume archive. If you want to extract this file, you must have all parts of the ARJ multi-volume archive. Open the first part of ARJ (e.g Avatar.arj file) multi-volume archive in ARJ application and extract files from ARJ multi-volume archive.
It is not possible to convert only one part of ARJ multi-volume archive. Only complete ARJ archive can be converted in to another archive or compression format. The easiest way how to convert complete ARJ multi-volume archive is to decompress the ARJ archive with the use of ARJ or any other supported archiver and repack the content with another compression or archive application of your choice.

The .a04 file extension identifies a numbered volume in an ALZ archive split into multiple files. In this sequence, the main archive uses the .alz extension, followed by numbered volumes such as .a00 through .a04.
The file contains part of the compressed archive data. All volumes are required to reconstruct the complete archive and extract its files; renaming or removing one of them can make the archive unreadable.
ALZip, developed by ESTsoft, supports this archive format on Microsoft Windows. The .a04 volume is intended to be used together with the matching ALZ archive set.
Place the .alz file and every accompanying volume, including the .a04 file, in the same folder. Open the main .alz file with ALZip on Microsoft Windows; ALZip should locate the numbered volumes automatically.
Opening the .a04 file by itself will not extract the archive because it contains only one part of the complete data set.
An individual .a04 volume cannot be meaningfully converted on its own. Keep all volumes together and open the main .alz file in ALZip, then extract the archived files.
To change the archive format, create a new archive from the extracted files using ALZip or another archive program that supports the desired format.
