Software that can be used for conversion of xls file type to vcard format.
In order to convert contacts from Excel XLS spreadsheet to a vCard contact file you need to first export export xls to csv and then use any of the available csv to vcf conversion utilities to get a vCard file. Should you need it, you can rename VCF to VCARD as it is the same file format.
Unfortunately, there is no detailed software record in the database for this conversion.

XLS
Files with xls extension are best known as spreadsheets from Microsoft Excel. A spreadsheet is basically a grid of cells sorted in rows and columns. Each cell can contain text, numeric or formula data. Excel XLS spreadsheets can be opened in most other similar programs, such as OpenOffice.org Calc.
VCARD
Files with vcard extension are contacts files saved in vCard format. Alternative to much more common vcf file extension.
