The crypt8 file extension is mainly associated with WhatsApp Messenger, an instant messaging service and instant messaging client for various mobile platforms.
The crypt8 files store encrypted and protected database with user chat history similar to SQLite database format. Used in one of the latest versions, but previously also crypt, crypt5, crypt6, crypt7 files were used for same purposes, however they may use different locations for encryption keys.
For crypt8 format, the default location is /data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key
WhatsApp often updates its crypt format, it is possible that it will be used crypt9, crypt10, crypt11, crypt12 extensions in the future.
By default, the file is called: msgstore.db.crypt8 and it is stored in phone SDcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder.
The encryption format of CRYPT8 files are same as CRYPT7, but the encryption key from location:
/data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key
You can recovery these backups with WhatsApp to restore your messages.
It is possible to recover conversations from WhatsApp backups with some dedicate utilities like WhatCrypt Tools or similar. For some devices like Android phones, you will need root to sucessfuly convert WhatsApp databses.
