File type category:
Backup file
Date updated: October 12, 2026
Record marked as obsolete and not updated for a long time.
The m09 file extension is associated with Microsoft Money, personal finance software developed by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft discontinued the product in 2010, and it is no longer supported.
Microsoft Money creates version-specific backup files when a data file is converted for use with a newer version. The related files use extensions from mn1 through m16. An m09 file contains the copy associated with Microsoft Money 2001. Each file uses the extension corresponding to the version of Microsoft Money in which it was last used.
These files are not required for Microsoft Money to run. However, they should be retained until it is certain that reverting to an older version is no longer necessary. An m09 file can be opened by the appropriate older version of Microsoft Money, whereas the mny cannot be opened by that previous version.
Open an m09 file with Microsoft Money 2001 on Microsoft Windows. Use the version of Microsoft Money that created the backup, because newer versions may not support this version-specific file.
If the file does not open directly, use Microsoft Money's restore or file-opening functions to access the backup data.
The m09 format is a version-specific Microsoft Money backup format and is not normally converted with a separate converter.
Open or restore the file in the compatible version of Microsoft Money, then use that program's data-file conversion or export features if available. Because Microsoft Money is discontinued, conversion may require access to an older Windows installation and a compatible copy of the software.
