MCF was an open, royalty-free format developed by video enthusiasts and programmers. Its specifications and software were intended to remain freely available. The format was designed to support streaming and broadcasting as well as ordinary media storage.
Like AVI, an MCF file can contain media encoded with other technologies. The project described support for MPEG-4 video, including XviD and DivX, as well as AC3, Ogg Vorbis and MP3 audio. MCF itself does not encode or compress these streams.
The project began because AVI was considered difficult to extend. It was initially known as TMF, and later appeared alongside other emerging container projects, including OGM. One of the lead developers, Steve Lhomme, experimented with EBML, a different way to store the format's data, and started the Matroska project. The other lead developer, Lasse Kärkkäinen, entered military service.
MCF development was subsequently stalled for six months because the remaining developers were not comfortable enough with developing the software. OGM and Matroska obtained working playback software for Windows and Linux, while MCF remained behind them. The project continued because its developers considered the format to have technical advantages over competing formats. MCF is now a historical format with very limited software support and is not in widespread current use.
Use compatible MCF software to open mcf files. The original MCF software, if available, is the most appropriate way to test or open one, but it may require a legacy environment.
If the file cannot be opened by the original software, identify it from a copy of the software or project that created it. Do not rename the file to another media extension, because that does not change its container format.
Compatible MCF tools may be able to export mcf files to other formats. If an original MCF tool can read the file, it may be possible to extract its audio and video streams and place them in a more widely supported container such as AVI or Matroska.
That process depends on the legacy software and on compatible codecs. If no MCF-compatible tool can read the file, it cannot be converted reliably without first recovering the streams from the container.

A .mcf file from this program seems to represent a photo project that defines the design of a photobook along with references for the photos used.
It is just a project and does not contain the photos itself.
As far as we know, these files can only be accessed with the MY CEWE Photobook software.
