The pax file extension is used by PAX, an archiving utility developed by POSIX with aim to create interchange format between TAR and CPIO.
But default the program creates tar archives, however they sometimes can be renamed to PAX.
The Unarchiver should be able to open *.pax archives.
Conversion to other formats is not possible.
