MPV is a standard for exchanging and playing collections of digital music, photos, and videos among consumer electronics devices and PCs on CDs, DVDs, memory cards, hard disks, home networks and across the internet. MPV is a series of XML-based specifications developed by the participating members of OSTA’s MPV committee.

MPV is comprised of a series of profiles and guidelines. The bases are the Core and Basic Profiles which define all the assets and album or collection. On top of these, there are various types of profiles that address particular use cases, media types or product types. Finally, the guidelines define strict or narrow versions of the profiles to ensure the profile use in products with limited capabilities (limited processing power, memory, storage, etc.)

• MPV adds rich, quickly-accessible metadata so products can easily support browsing, playing, and printing multimedia collections.
• Users can navigate large collections of hundreds or thousands of files organized into multiple playlists, such as songs by genre, by artist, and by album.
• Standard creation and playback of a multimedia slideshows of pictures and video with background music and transition effects – guaranteed to playback in the order the user intended on MPV-supported devices
• Songs can have album art, lyrics, music in both audio-only and video file formats, and multiple encodings of the same music, for example WMA and MP3.
• MPV manages multiple renditions of images, such as high resolution, screen resolution, and thumbnails that enable high-performance playback on low-end systems using low-res images and printing using high-res images.

MPV is based on creating a playlist and asset management control file for collections of music, photo, and video files in any combination. A playlist is an index or table of contents that specifies the location of files and the order in which to play them. It is an open, multiplatform, free specification developed and managed by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA). A logo is available to communicate compatibility, such as between CD burning software and CD players.
