The aim of this format is to give citation and bibliographic software the ability to exchange data. RIS format is supported by large number of reference managers and digital libraries.
RIS format is a simply ASCII text file that contains citation entries in lines that contain two letters, two spaces, a dash, a space and the reference.
Where the two letters denote a special tags that define various elements in the bibliographic reference, such as name of the source, author of the source, date, page number, ISBN etc.

RIS format can be imported to various bibliographic software. These files can also be viewed in any text editor.
