File extension woff2 is used for the Web Open Font Format (Open Font Format 2.0). It was designed to provide lightweight, easy-to-implement compression of font data, suitable for use with CSS.

The new WOFF 2.0 Web Font compression format based on the Brotli compression algorithm offers a 30% average gain over WOFF 1.0 (up to 50%+ in some cases). WOFF 2.0 is available since Chrome version 36 and Opera 23 and Firefox 35.
