DOC

doc file extension is commonly used for text documents created in Microsoft Word word processor before version 2007. Word DOC documents can be opened in almost every (if not every) other word processor, such as OpenOffice.org Writer or iWork Pages.

A doc file extension is used throughout the time by many various applications for their document files.

MDI

An mdi file extension is associated with the Microsoft Office Document Imaging file format. An mdi file contains graphics data in high resolution. Only supported in Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007 with MODI tool that comes as part of the suite. 

An mdi file extension is related to the MIDI audio file format.

Files with mdi file extension might also be found as multiple document interface files from Borland programs.
