We have found 6 software records in our database eligible for .m4a to .alac file format conversion.
m4a to alac conversion is in most cases actually not really needed, considering that modern .m4a files (especially those from iTunes) already contain ALAC encoded audio track inside the M4A container. Older .m4a files or files outside of iTunes might contain audio track in different format (AIFF most notably) and while encoding these files to ALAC format is doable, it serves no actual purpose as the AIFF format is compressed with lossy method already and thus of reduced quality.

M4A
Files with m4a extension are audio files stored in MPEG-4 (MP4) container and use AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), or Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio compression. M4A is very popular on Mac computers, because it is default audio format used by iTunes. M4A is also default audio format for Apple portable devices (iPod, iPhone, iPad).
ALAC
Files with alac extension are audio tracks encoded using Apple Lossless Audio Codec and typically found as part of CAF or more frequently M4A audio files from iTunes.
