The ais file extension is associated with the Xerox Alto, an early personal computer developed at XeroX PARC in 1973.
The *.ais files are used for one of the Alto subsystems, namely a driver subsystem, which interacts with the user to perform a set of standard operations on imaginal data stored as AIS (Array of Intensity Samples) files.The ais files are basically a 8-bit/pixel image files.
