The AIS format belongs to the Xerox Alto, an early personal computer developed at Xerox PARC in 1973.
AIS files were used by an Alto driver subsystem, which interacted with the user to perform standard operations on image data. The format represents an image as an array of intensity values, with each sample using 8 bits per pixel.
This file format is no longer supported.
To open an AIS file, use the original Xerox Alto environment or an emulator with software that specifically supports the Alto AIS format. Modern image viewers generally cannot open AIS files directly.
If the file is important, preserve the original Alto software and system context along with the file, because the AIS data may depend on that environment.
A file may be exportable to a modern image format from an AIS-aware application running in a Xerox Alto environment or compatible emulator.
Without access to software that understands AIS, reliable conversion is not normally possible.
