Přípona souboru igs běžně odkazuje na soubory ve International Graphics Exchange Standard (IGES), standardním formátu schváleném ANSI, který se používá pro 3D drátové modely původně vytvořené v roce 1979.
Je třeba být velmi opatrný při získávání CAD souborů ze všech dnešních moderních CAD balíků, protože většina/mnoho z nich exportuje dlouho zastaralou variantu „Surfaces NURBS“ (málo kdo zná tyto rozdíly).
Existují 3 hlavní verze IGES:
80. léta „Bounded Surfaces“, 90. léta „Surfaced NURBS“ a moderní 2000. léta „BREP Manifold Solids“.
Soubor IGES by měl být exportován pouze v poslední verzi „BREP Manifold Solids“. Pokud se pokusíte konvertovat přes „Surfaced NURBS“ (která nemá BREP topologii), model se rozpadne na tisíce jednotlivých NURBS patchů, což vede k praskání patchů, obráceným nebo náhodně orientovaným plochám, invertovaným normálám vrcholů (pro vyhlazování) a efektům černých pruhů.
Lidé na fórech často stěžují, že IGES není dobrý formát pro konverzi CAD souborů, ale to je pouze proto, že používají špatnou verzi a/nebo nekvalitní 3D IGES importéry.
Poznámka: soubory IGES jsou omezeny velikostí 2GB kvůli omezenému vnitřnímu číselnému rozsahu.
