What is dos file? How to open dos files?

File type specification:

Backup file type icon Backup file type

The dos file extension is associated with dual boot of MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows 95 operating systems.

When installing Microsoft Windows 95 over a preexisting MS-DOS install, config.sys and autoexec.bat are renamed to config.dos and autoexec.dos. This is intended to ease dual booting between Microsoft Windows 95 and older MS-DOS.

This dos file type entry was marked as obsolete and no longer supported file format.

This type of file is no longer actively used and is most likely obsolete. This is typically the case for system files in old operating systems, file types from long discontinued software, or previous versions of certain file types (like documents, projects etc.) that were replaced in higher versions of their original programs.
