IBM BookManager READ used BKS files to back up its read bookshelves. A bookshelf is the collection of books and associated bookshelf information that BookManager presents to the reader.
The file belongs to BookManager's backup and recovery workflow. It preserves bookshelf data so that the bookshelf can be restored in BookManager READ; it is separate from the individual softcopy book files.
This format is associated with the legacy Microsoft Windows version of IBM BookManager. It is not a general-purpose document format.
Open or restore a BKS file with IBM BookManager READ for Microsoft Windows. Use the program's bookshelf backup or restore function rather than opening the file as a normal document.
If BookManager is not installed, the file cannot normally be read as a standalone book. Installing the compatible Windows version of BookManager may be necessary to recover the bookshelf.
A BKS bookshelf backup does not have a useful direct conversion to a standard document format. Restore it in IBM BookManager READ first.
After restoration, any available export or printing options in BookManager can be used for the individual books, but the BKS backup itself is not normally converted directly.

IBM BookManager was a system for distributing and reading electronic documentation. The IBM Softcopy Reader is a Java-based reader and organizer for BookManager publications, consisting of the Book Reader and the Shelf Organizer. A BKS file represents a BookManager book used by this software.
IBM introduced Softcopy Reader in 2000 as a replacement for the original IBM Library Reader (ILR). Both readers can read BookManager books, but ILR is no longer supported and is provided only on an as-is basis. Softcopy Reader is legacy software, although it remains the appropriate program for this file type on Microsoft Windows.
Open the BKS file with IBM Softcopy Reader on Microsoft Windows. Install or launch the reader, then use its Book Reader function to open the BookManager book.
If the file does not open, it may depend on other files from the same BookManager publication or bookshelf. The original IBM Library Reader can also read BookManager books, but it is no longer supported.
To create a more portable document, open the book in IBM Softcopy Reader and print or copy the required content where possible.
